Mikko in Nairobi
August 11, 2005
Yesterday I went to say
goodbye for now to the Daystar University Athi
River campus where I studied from the end of May
to the beginning of August. Classes ended a bit
over a week ago, now I just had some final details
to sort out. Among them was an application requesting
exemption for practicum credits based on work
experience. I was told the university policy is
to exempt students from practicum based on work
experience totaling over one year corresponding
to field of study after consideration on a case-by-case
basis. I hope the Community Development Department
committee deliberating the issue will make a favourable
decision so that I will have the necessary credits
needed for graduation.
The plan is to travel to
the countryside (known as 'upcountry' in Kenya)
this coming Sunday. Destination: a small town
in Murang'a, a few hours trip from Nairobi. Sunday
morning service and a visit to a new Hope for
Tomorrow project are awaiting there. Murang'a
is in the heartland of the Kikuyu tribe, I will
be hearing a lot of Kikuyu spoken in addition
to the usual Kiswahili and English. There is likely
to be more information on this website in the
near future about the First Love Pentecostal Church's
First Love Care project.
Next week it will be time
to return to Mombasa. I have been in Nairobi for
almost 3 months with only one trip back; it will
be good to see how things are going. The Camp
David support group is preparing for its second
income-generating project to add to soap-making,
our group of sponsored high school students are
eagerly waiting for the youth mission that is
set to take place in the end of August.
