Mikko in Mombasa
December 20, 2004
Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)- "Keep
your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring
the issues of life."
Christmas time in Mombasa
is summer time, and many are on vacation for a
week or so, all the way up to New Year's. All
schools are closed for the whole of December.
It is common in Mombasa to go back home to spend
the holiday, so many will go "upcountry" while
others, such as families from abroad, will come
here for the holiday. Christmas is spent with
the family. Camp David Centre is also closed for
the vacation for almost two weeks. A new semester
begins in January, so for the last days of this
year to the first days of the next, work will
not cease. At least there's some time to sort
out some stuff.
I have been offered to
stay in a swahili-house. Both families that live
there are going to have a baby, but now the other
family is moving to Nairobi for work before the
baby is born, so two rooms would be vacant for
me... A swahili-house refers to its architecture.
The building is usually long and has a hallway
in the middle, either with or without a roof,
with rooms on both sides. The washing area is
usually shared, and the water is carried from
the nearest tap or further. Electricity they might
or might not have. Houses can be made from mud,
sticks, cement or rock.
This house is made from
cement and rock. It has two bathrooms and four
rooms - two rooms on both sides of the roofed
hallway, having their own front doors at the end
of the hallway. The landlord lives on the other
side of the house with his own front door. If
it's God's plan I will be living in that house.
In his sermon last Sunday,
Pastor Wilfred Lai reminded us of the wisdom of
the wise men of the east, who followed the star
and brought the best gifts to Jesus.
